WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SIZING, FINISHING AND LAYING
All of our natural stone paving is available in a standard range of sizes which accommodate a number of random patterns as well as popular grid modules: 600 x 600, 600 x 300, 300 x 300, 900 x 600 and 450 x 450.
For a slightly higher meterage rate, we also supply paving as edging stones and cobblestones: 450 x 150, 100 x 100, 100 x 150 and 100 x 200.
To retain as much natural character as possible our stones are supplied as natural split with hand cut edges. We feel this is a more appropriate finish for landscape paving and an increasingly popular and authentic choice for internal paving. It achieves a more sympathetic effect, more in keeping with the nature of the material, than the crisp, icy and stylized effect of perfectly cut and machined tiles.
This means that their thickness will vary between 20-30mm and their dimensions will have a tolerance of plus or minus 10mm. To allow for this variance they need to be laid into a bed of wet concrete or mortar and with a joint of approx 10-20mm in between. This joint becomes a feature of the paving and can be accentuated with colour and shaping. Colour can be changed by adding an oxide to the mortar mix and shaping can be either dished or peaked or slanted depending on how the trowel is used to finish the joint.
To allow for this joint the actual dimensions of the paving stones are 20mm less than stated. i.e. 580 x 580 opposed to 600 x 600.
When quantifying for the paving however, the nominal full dimension (e.g. 600 x 600) should be used, because in effect, each paver will cover an area that includes the joint around it.
Custom sizes, machined finishes and edge profiles are all available to order and will be cut at source. Any of the above will be priced upon application and will be dependant on quantities. Machined finishes include: calibrated thickness, honed surface, bull nosed or straight sawn edges etc. |
